Learn Canasta

The rummy classic of melds, red threes, and canastas, a partnership game that rewards patience and timing.

Canasta is coming to Stoa Games. The guide below is free to read now.

Canasta is a rummy-family game for partners, built around forming melds (sets of the same rank) and, ideally, a canasta, a meld of seven cards. It is simple to start and surprisingly deep once you learn when to take the discard pile, when to freeze it, and how red threes help or hurt you.

Canasta travels well beyond the US, it has a strong following in Australia and the UK too.

What you’ll learn

  • How a hand is dealt and how melding works
  • Red threes, and why they are both a bonus and a trap
  • Taking, and freezing, the discard pile
  • Minimum-meld thresholds and how they change as your score climbs
  • Making a canasta and going out cleanly
  • Playing as a partnership: signals, timing, and safety

A full beginner’s guide is coming. Add your email and we’ll send it the moment it is ready, and tell you when Canasta lands in the Stoa Games app.
